Riva Starr Loves Lemons

Riva Starr is one of the best things out of Italy since they started making pizza and Ferrari’s, playing at bigger and bigger stages all the time. He recently put out the official video for the first single from his album on Made to Play. Not as good as the original, but a classic track to drop - seeing him in a small club in his home country of Italy was easily one of the top five sets I’ve seen. Always a prolific remixer, one of Riva’s latest is for Butch on Amsterdam’s longest running techno label, 100% Pure. His take on ‘XTC’ is a flashback-flashfoward banger, combining old school house-diva vocals with a bouncing bassline that pushes the track to its vocal-filled breaks and then back to a frantic drop.

Riva’s remix on Michel Cleis' 2009 underground anthem 'La Mezcla' is an epic 10 minute journey of a track. It's a tribal track laden with Latin percussion and completed by Toto La Momposina's enchanting vocals.  Don't be afraid of this track for its length - Riva destroyed the dance floor with it, slowly whipping the crowd up into a tribal frenzy before releasing it into a light groove with a heavy percussive bassline.

San Francisco’s dirtybird Records definitely brings out a different side of its producers.  Many of Riva Starr’s earlier releases were released on the label, and exhibit a different, bass-heavy, sample-happy side of his music with a light bounce in its step.

THE track that turned me onto Riva in the first place was his explosive take on ‘Love Long Distance’ by American indie rock band, The Gossip.  The real magic of the song lies in the vocal effects he inflicts on singer Beth Ditto’s voice, twisting and stuttering them to perfect effect.

Though not a Riva Starr track, I watched the dance floor fill almost instantly when he dropped this bigroom slapper by Amsterdam’s DJ Madskillz.

Enjoy, and if you’re in Isla Vista or Santa Barbara, the entire EasyLove crew will be throwing it down hard TONIGHT at the EasyLove House on 6625 Del Playa Drive.

Riva Starr, Annie Mac, and Doorly will be at Control at the Avalon in Hollywood on September 17th. If you are in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend you mark your calendars for this date.
